Caterre - Ghrian - 04-08-2018

Caterre
Welcome to Caterre, a herd made up of power and intellect. We strive to cultivate greatness within ourselves and to promote greatness within others. Our descent from the stars, our lives a gift from the Great Above, has granted us a look into what we and the Orian could become. Among the long grasses and calm pools of the Sterling Glades and Lillie's Tear, we reign as kings and queens of our domain. Those who prove their worth will step into power and those who would rather live peacefully protected may do so. Mass closeness is fostered rather than biological bonds that would only cause rifts within Caterre and threaten the balance that we so carefully nurture.

Rank Information
House of Fire
  • Father of Fire~ He is responsible for the protection of the herd. He makes the decisions and is always on the front lines in times of war. It is his duty to lead as well as to listen. Out-right challenging his laws is frowned upon, but he takes every concern into consideration.

  • Ember Mother~ This is the lead doe. It is her duty to watch over the herd and direct others in the Father of Fire's absence. When the Father of Fire is present, it is the Ember Mother's duty to care for orphaned and abandoned fawns as well as teach the young of the herd the ways of the Caterre.

  • Ashes~ These are the children of the Father of Fire and of the Ember Mother as well as orphaned fawns taken in by the Ember Mother. They only hold this rank until they are six months of age and old enough to go into training.
House of Earth
  • Earth Caller~ It is the Earth Caller's duty to train others in the name of herd defense. They have proven themselves in battle and are hardened warriors.

  • Stone Hearts~ These are warriors, led by the Earth Caller, who lay down their lives in defense of Caterre.

  • Pebbles~ Young fawns under the age of two who are trained by Stone Hearts in the art of war. These deer are automatically promoted to the rank of Stone Heart at the age of two.
House of Water
  • Water Dancer~ The Water Dancer is the first line of defense against contagious disease and crippling injury. They care for the sick en-masse and are personally responsible for monitoring the health of the Father of Fire and Ember Mother in the case of injury and/or sickness.

  • River Walkers~ It is the duty of River Walkers to cleanse the herd of injury and sickness. It falls on them to deal with fatal conditions as well as highly contagious infections.

  • Rain Drops~ These are young deer, under the age of two years old, who train directly under River Walkers to learn the art of healing. Once they reach the age of two, they are considered River Walkers in their own right.
House of Wind
  • Wind Singer~ This is the herd's most knowledgeable member when it comes to the constellations. They are in charge of keeping records and reading the night sky to discover new constellations.

  • Breeze Runners~ These are the herd's knowledge spreaders. They go out into the world in small groups to spread the herd's knowledge of the constellations. They do not attempt to coerce others into joining Caterre, they simply work to provide others with the same knowledge that Caterre holds.

  • Breaths~ They are the young who train under and eventually travel with Breeze Runners. They train until they reach two years of age and then become full-fledged Breeze Runners.
House of Spirit
  • Soul Weaver~ This deer is responsible for the general happiness of the herd. This member of the herd should be a gentle soul with kindness reigning in their heart. They should be warm and welcoming to newcomers and are often the member who helps young fawns choose what training they will undertake.

  • Spirit Keepers~ Un-ranked members of the herd. They are the civilians who birth new life and guide each other. They often gather food for those who are busy with their duties and are tasked with keeping the peace among themselves in exchange for a comfortable place to bed down and protection from predators.

  • Soullings~ The youngest of the herd. Fawns are considered "soullings" until they are six months of age and old enough to train.

Herd Information
Laws
These are laws set forth by the Father of Fire. To oppose these laws is treason, and is punishable to the fullest extent of his imagination.

1. The Herd comes before all others.

2. Fawns are to join one of the three training ranks at the age of six months. At the age of two years, they will either decide to stay in their chosen house or return to the House of Souls.

3. Members new to the herd are granted two months to decide which house they will join. They may also decide to stay within the House of Souls.

4. Any challenges held during Mating Season are to be non-lethal. Any fatalities brought about due to these challenges are considered a severe act of treason in accordance with Law 5.

5. No member of Caterre is to kill another member of the Herd. This is the most egregious act of treason known to the deer of Caterre and is punishable by death.
Constellations
These are our beliefs, our mothers, our fathers, our birthright... Our gods. The Constellations hold secrets from lives that we do not remember. They are what is left of our kind, stars that will one day fall to join us. Stars that show us what we need to do before they join us.

The Mother

A vision of beauty made up of seven stars, the crown of her head being the brightest. She is our goddess, the truest Cerulis. It is under her gaze that we thrive. She is lost to us during the winter months, only returning during the warmer seasons when she raises the grasses from their earthly prison.

The Father

Made up of 11 stars, he is a warrior and intricately tied with the Mother. He is her protector, guiding her through the sky and ensuring her safety.

The Bear

A great beast, the Bear is made up of 14 stars. He is a gentle spirit, though his visage is formidable, frightening. When the Mother leaves us, the bear enters the sky with his large body and warm fats. It is his hibernation that helps us live safely through the winter.

The Fawn

Made up of only five stars, the fawn is the smallest constellation of all. It is visible in the summer, just on the edge of the horizon right before the sun rises. The fawn is our beginning, our sunrise, the mark of a new day to come.

The Crow

Disgusting carrion beast, the Crow follows us through winter, picking off of the corpses of our dead. She soars above the clouds, her bodice and wings made up of almost 20 stars. When spring comes forth, the Father drives her away until he must follow the Mother to green pastures when snows cover the land, leaving us open to the Crow's wrath once again.

Events

The Awakening

When the Mother and Father enter the heavens and chase away the Crow, we celebrate their success with a feast of sweet spring buds and grasses gathered by Spirit Keepers.

The Arrival

The first fawn of the late spring/early summer signals the Awakening, often followed closely by the arrival of the Fawn in the early morning hours. The Arrival is a celebration of birth. The first fawn of the season is seen as a blessing and is blessed by all members of the herd. The newly birthed member of Caterre is decorated in the colourful paints made by crushing early-blooming fruit and small flowers. Their mother is brought the most delicate of clovers from the glades to aid in their overall health.

The Great Battle

When the first doe of the herd reaches estrus in any given year, this spurs the Great Battle. It is a tournament held for those who wish to battle for the right to a doe. No doe is forced to take a partner that she does not wish, ensuring that those who wish to win her affections must also do their best to be in her good graces through the rest of the year in the event that they actually win such battles.

The Sleep

In the beginning of the winter, when the Mother and Father leave our sight and the Crow overtakes the night sky, we lament. Does and fawns cry out as bucks stand stoically, knowing that the time of ice and snow and predators is upon us and that some of us will not make it to see the next Awakening.
